Soil and Fertilizer Institute (SFI) was founded in 1938 and belongs to Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS). It is a multidisciplinary research organization on soil, fertilizer, and environmental sciences in Sichuan, which consists of a key laboratory on land resource use and preservation, located in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, and a long-term fertilizer experiment field station on the Calcareous Purplish Soil in Suining city of Sichuan province and five research departments (soil conservation, plant nutrition and fertilizer, soil microbe, water management and the centre laboratory). The institute has expertise in plant nutrition, balanced fertilization, site specific fertilization management, soil erosion modeling land use planning, sustainable agriculture in both lowlands and uplands and natural resource management. The recent research activities focus on participatory research on management for sustainable agriculture on sloping lands in Sichuan, soil erosion and balanced fertilization, water-saving irrigation, and soil fertility improvement management on uplands in Sichuan basin. The plant and fertilizer group has a long-term experience (about 32 year) in Purple soil areas affected by different fertilizer treatment and Rice-wheat rotation system.
